Family Shelter
Upward Bound House purchased the Sun Bay Motel, located in Culver City, and converted the motel into an emergency shelter for families with minor children. Family Shelter provides short-term housing for families in crisis. In addition to secure, safe accommodations for each family, the program features intensive wrap-around case management, counseling, a food program and other stabilization services.
Project highlights include:
18 units of emergency shelter for children and their families, plus two units for on-site staff, representing 60 new beds.
Family shelter serves approximately 240 children and their parents each year, becoming a significant resource in the region’s effort to place vulnerable children in safe, dignified housing.
Capital funding for the project came from a diverse array of public and private sources, including Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky and Mark Ridley-Thomas, the cities of Los Angeles, Santa Monica and Beverly Hills, and the State of CA. LA County Supervisors have committed vital operational funding for the first three years of operations.
Family Shelter will be based on UBH’s successful transitional housing program, which has a 95% success rate of helping families move into – and retain – permanent housing. UBH has served homeless families since 1991.
Before being selected to participate in UBH’s emergency family shelter, all applicants will undergo a thorough screening process at another location. In-take partners include the Los Angeles Department of Public Social Services (DPSS), St. Joseph Center, among others.
Leading interior designers from across Los Angeles designed and furnished all 18 units – pro bono – creating dignified and comfortable living spaces. Volunteers are needed on a forward going basis to support the families by donating basic necessities (linens, hygiene products, etc).
